ROGERS PASS SNOW SHED LIGHTING

Lens Snow ShedLocation: Rogers Pass - Glacier National Park, BC

Client: Parks Canada

Capital Cost: $4 million (Electrical)

 

 

Shaflik Responsibilities:

Design and construction project management of three provincial snow sheds and five federal snow sheds located in Glacier National Park.  Design scope included the pre-selection of proper luminaires, primary power distribution, tunnel lighting design, lighting control system design.  Project management includes construction inspection, progress payment review, PLC ladder logic programming, start-up and commissioning. 

 

CLOVERDALE ATHLETIC PARK

Location: Surrey, BC

Client: City of Surrey, Athletica

Capital Cost: $.6 million (Electrical)

 

Shaflik Responsibilities:

Preparation of the preliminary, and detailed designs and provided construction supervision for all of the electrical work for two softball fields and one artificial multi-use field. Special Features: Included a control link for the field lighting to allow the city to access the lighting from the world wide web.

 

 

CROWCHILD TRAIL Corridor Improvement Project, Brisebois Interchange tO FIFTY THIRD Street Interchange

Location: Crowchild Trail, Calgary, AB

Client: Kiewit Management, Transportation Project Office, City of Calgary

Capital Cost: $1.2 million (Electrical)

 

Shaflik Responsibilities:

Preparation of the preliminary, and detailed designs of all electrical work for this freeway construction project through the City of Calgary.  Capital Value:  Electrical, $1.2M.  Special Features: Design-build project.- Interchange Highmast Lighting – Tunnel Lighting.

 

AMBLESIDE PARK ARTIFICIAL FIELDS

Location: West Vancouver, BC

Client: District of West Vancouver, Athletica

Capital Cost: $.8 million (Electrical)

 

Shaflik Responsibilities:

Preparation of the preliminary, and detailed designs and provided construction supervision for all of the electrical work for two artificial multi-use field. Special Features: Address area residents concerns regarding light glare from the fixtures and field as well as a control link for the field lighting to allow the city to access the lighting from the world wide web.

 

okanagan lake bridge electrical upgrade project

Location: Kelowna, BC

Client: Ministry of Transportation

Capital Cost: $.75 million (Electrical)

 

Shaflik Responsibilities:

Conducted design, supervision and project management to upgrade the voltage; reversible lane controls; roadway lighting, and signing; and, power control and distribution systems of a lift bridge.  Special Features: Involved upgrading to a high voltage service, CCTV system; extensive co-ordination with all levels of government; accommodation for high traffic volumes; and, restrictions as to when work could be conducted due to high usage.

 

CASSIAR CONNECTOR PROJECT (Trans Canada Highway)

Location: Vancouver, BC

Client: SNC-Lavalin, Ministry of Transportation

Capital Cost: $5 million (Electrical)

 

Shaflik Responsibilities:

Carried out design, construction supervision, and inspection of all roadway lighting, traffic signals, signing, and advanced systems.  Special Features:  Included safe maintenance of traffic through construction in the busiest intersection in Western Canada with little and/or no inconvenience to the motoring public; and, liaison and co-ordination with two major government agencies; the City of Vancouver and the Ministry of Transportation

ALEX FRASER BRIDGE PROJECT

Location: Delta, BC

Client: Ministry of Transportation

Capital Cost: $2.5 million (Electrical)

 

Shaflik Responsibilities:

Provided specialty roadway lighting, communications system, tower floodlighting, navigational aid lighting, and power distribution. Special Features: Involved specialty flood lighting; weather monitoring during construction; aesthetics; and, accommodation for future ITS systems

 

 

 

 

Trans Canada Highway Traffic Management Program

Location: Burnaby / Coquitlam, BC

Client: Ministry of Transportation

Capital Cost: $3.7 million (Electrical)

 

Shaflik Responsibilities:

Research and development of the preliminary and detailed design for the CCTV, incident detection, and changeable message sign systems, and other related Traffic Management Systems.  Included preliminary design of the fiber-optic communications system network.  Special Features:  Advanced ITS system research and development.  Development of a synchronous optical network system (SONET).  Preparation of performance specifications for specialized ITS components. 

CAMBIE STREET BRIDGE PROJECT

Location: Vancouver, BC

Client: ND Lea Consultants, City of Vancouver

Capital Cost: $2 million (Electrical)

 

Shaflik Responsibilities:

Provided specialty roadway lighting, decorative lighting and power distribution. Special Features: Involved architect’s speciality flood lighting; aesthetics; and, accommodation for traffic congestion and trolley poles.

 

 

GREAT BEAR SNOW SHED, COQUIHALLA HIGHWAY PROJECT

Location: Hope, BC

Client: Ministry of Transportation

Capital Cost: $1.3 million (Electrical)

 

Shaflik Responsibilities:

Designed and supervised the electrical systems for the snow shed including tunnel lighting, pavement heating, power distribution, and communications systems.  Special Features: Utilized state-of-the-art programmable logic lighting controllers for efficiency.

 

TRANS CANADA HIGHWAY HOV PROJECT

Location: Coquitlam to Vancouver, BC

Client: Reid Crowther and Partners, Ministry of Transportation

Capital Cost: $4.0 million (Electrical)

 

Shaflik Responsibilities:

Prepared the detailed design for roadway lighting and highway signing for the widening of the freeway through Burnaby and Coquitlam.  Special Features:  Development of completely new project specific design and construction standards.

 

BRITISH COLUMBIA RED LIGHT CAMERA PROJECT

Location: Province wide, BC

Client: Insurance Corporation of British Columbia

 

 

 

 

 

 

Shaflik Responsibilities:

Preparation of the functional, preliminary, and detailed designs; the design guidelines; and material and construction standards for the Red Light camera photo enforcement program in British Columbia.  Special Features:  Field testing and selection of various component parts.  Development of deployment and construction standards.

 

CHINA BAR TUNNEL LIGHTING PROJECT

Location: Fraser Canyon, BC

Client: Ministry of Transportation

Capital Cost: $.6 million (Electrical)

 

 

 

Shaflik Responsibilities:

Designed and supervised the electrical systems renovations and upgrade for the tunnel including tunnel lighting, ventilation system, power distribution, and communications systems. Special Features: Utilized state-of-the-art programmable logic lighting controllers for efficiency.

 

 

VANCOUVER/RICHMOND RAPID BUS PROJECT

Location: Richmond, BC

Client: Delcan Corporation, Translink

Capital Cost: $1.5 million (Electrical)

 

Shaflik Responsibilities:

Completed the designs 13 traffic signals, decorative street lighting, tree lighting and bus shelter electrical systems along No. 3 Road and Sea Island Way in Richmond.  Special Features:  These signals will incorporate state-of-the-art ITS AVL bus priority systems and will be tied into Richmond’s Traffic Signal Control Center.

 

AIRPORT CONNECTOR PROJECT - PHASE II

Location: Richmond, BC

Client: Walter – SNC Lavalin, YVR and Translink

Capital Cost: $1.8 million (Electrical)

 

Shaflik Responsibilities:

Preparation of the functional, preliminary and detailed designs for the roadway lighting, traffic signals, bridge lighting and navigation lighting for the extension of Bridgport Road across the Moray Channel and Airport Infrastructure upgrade along with 2 traffic signals and bus shelter electrical systems along No. 3 Road and Sea Island Way in Richmond.  Special Features:  These signals will incorporate state-of-the-art ITS AVL bus priority systems and will be tied into Richmond’s Traffic Signal Control Centre. 

 

·          Trans Canada Highway Guide Signing Rehabilitation Program Detailed Design, Port Mann to Hope:

Preparation of the functional, preliminary, and detailed designs, and the construction supervision for the guide signing upgrade along the Trans Canada Highway from Surrey to Hope.  Capital Value: $1.1M.  Special Features:  Application of the new guide signing standards.  Client:  Ministry of Transportation.

·           Lions Gate Bridge Contraflow System, Vancouver:

Consulted on controls; and, provided graphical user interface software for contraflow system.  Capital Value:  $4.5M. Special Features:  Utilized, for the first time, standard off-the-shelf programmable logic controllers and graphical user interface in the traffic management system; involved software that was written in generic manner for universal use in other lane control systems; included installation  of the entire new system with no disruption to traffic; and, reduced maintenance costs greatly.  Special Features:  Development of new ITS technology.  Client:  BC Ministry of Transportation.

·          Kamloops Weigh Scale Weigh-in-Motion System, Coquihalla Highway Project, Phase II, Merritt to Kamloops:

Designed and supervised the installation of a weigh-in-motion advanced scale system.  Capital Value: Electrical, $100,000.  Special Features: Utilized state-of-the-art ITS technology for efficiency of trucks.  Client: Ministry of Transportation.

·          Coquihalla Highway Drivers Information Display System, Coquihalla Highway Project, All 3 Phases:

Conducted design of computerized, remotely controlled, variable message signing installation.  Capital Value: Electrical, $2.5M.  Special Features: Utilized state-of-the-art ITS technology for real time message signing displays; and, involved mountainous terrain and adverse climate.  Client: Ministry of Transportation.

·           Skeena Valley Driver Information Display System, Terrace to Prince Rupert:

Designed two changeable message signs in the Terrace-Rupert area.  Capital Value: $800,000.  Special Features: Co-ordinated the supply and installation of large sign bridge structures; and, utilized new Ministry changeable message sign technology.  Required advance procurement of new ITS technology.  Client: Ministry of Transportation.

·           Sumas Prairie Driver Information Display System, Chilliwack, BC:

Designed several changeable message signs in the Fraser valley area of Greater Vancouver.  Capital Value: $2M.  Special Features: Co-ordinated the supply and installation of large sign bridge structures; and, utilized new Ministry changeable message sign technology.  Required advance procurement of new ITS technology.  Client: Ministry of Transportation.

·           Churchill-Roosevelt Freeway Project, Trinidad:

Designed signals and lighting with a computerized signal interconnection system.  Capital Value: Electrical, $3M.  Special Features: Included co-ordination with bridges an elevated highway; a computerized traffic co-ordination system; a priority bus route and, a design in an area with no standards or regulations.  Client: ND Lea and Associates for the Government of Trinidad and Tobago.

·          Westview Interchange Design/Build Project, Trans Canada Highway, Lighting, Signals, and Signing, North Vancouver:

Carried out design and full project management of all electrical and signing work for this freeway construction through North Vancouver.  Capital Value:  Electrical, $2.1M.  Special Features: Involved an urban freeway and the first MoT design-build project.  Client: Walter and SCI Construction for the Ministry of Transportation.

·         Johnson/Mariner Overpass Design/Build Project, Lighting, Signals, and Signing, Coquitlam:

Carried out design and full project management of all electrical and signing work for this railway overhead structure adjacent to the Lougheed Highway.  Capital Value:  Electrical, $0.6M.  Special Features: Involved the second MoT design-build project.  Client: Peter Kiewit and Sons for the Ministry of Transportation.

·           Barnard Avenue Bridge Design/Build Project, Lighting and Signals, Kelowna:

Undertaking design and full project management of all electrical work for this railway overhead structure and associated roadway.  Capital Value:  Electrical, $250,000.  Special Features: Involves a municipal design-build project.  Client: Surespan General Contractors for the City of Kelowna.

·          South Surrey Interchange Design/Build Project, Highway 99, Lighting, Signals, and Signing, Surrey:

Undertaking design and full project management of all electrical and signing work for this freeway construction through south Surrey.  Capital Value:  Electrical, $2.0M.  Special Features: Involves a sub-urban freeway and the third MoT design-build project.  Client: BA Blacktop for the Ministry of Transportation.

·           Hamilton / Westminster Interchange Project, Richmond / New Westminster / Delta:

Supervised lighting, traffic signal, and signing design.  Capital Value: Project, $80M; Electrical, $4.5M.  Special Features: Included  high mast lighting, 40 metres tall; and, a program to analyze lighting levels on the freeway.  Required advance procurement of all specialized equipment.  Client: Delcan Consultants for the Ministry of Transportation.

·           No. 2 Road Bridge and Russ Baker Way Project, Richmond, BC: 

Designed bridge lighting, roadway lighting, and traffic signals.  Capital Value:  $35M; Electrical, $2M.  Special Features:  Co-ordinated with the civil designer to locate conduits and concrete bases in the bridge structure; installed receptacles inside the bridge box girder; provided decorative lighting design; and, maintained the required lighting levels with pole height constraints.  Designed traffic signals at Russ baker Way and Miller Road to Richmond standards.  Client:  PBK Engineering Ltd. for the City of Richmond.

·          Grant McConnachie Way Lighting and Signing Upgrade, Vancouver International Airport, BC: 

Designed roadway lighting and guide signing upgrade.  Capital Value: Electrical, $200,000.  Special Features:  Part of YVR’s ‘Consulting Services for Pavement Design & Construction Services 1997-99’ Contract.   Client:  UMA Engineering Ltd. for Vancouver International Airport Authority.

·           Knight Street Bridge Project, Vancouver, BC:

Designed bridge deck heating for roadway de-icing.  Capital Value: Electrical, $2M.  Special Features: Involved specialized control system; weather monitoring system; pioneered implementation of fully heated deck bridge; and, recognized internationally as leaders in this field.  Client: CBA Engineering Ltd and BC Department of Highways.

·           Vancouver Airport Parallel Runway Project, Vancouver, BC:

Supervised airside electrical systems design of various lighting and associated distribution systems for a new runway, related taxi-ways, and the apron area.  Capital Value: $9M.  Special Features: Involved the first Category III installation in Canada; and, liaised and co-ordinated with all regulatory bodies to determine design parameters.  Client: Vancouver International Airport Authority. 

·           Numerous Municipal Roadway Lighting and Traffic Signal Projects throughout BC:

Carried out design, inspection and supervision of traffic signals and roadway lighting on over 2000 projects.  Capital Values:  Electrical, $5000-$100,000/project.  Clients:  Various BC Municipalities.

·          BC Highways Traffic Engineering and Electrical Design Guidelines, Material Standards, and Construction Strandards:

Research and development of the Ministry of Transportation and Highways new design guidelines, material standards, and construction standards for electrical and traffic engineering systems.  Shaflik Engineering produced and published the documents.  Special Features:  As part of the material standards Shaflik Engineering prepared and administered the pre-purchase and standing offer contracts for the Ministry’s electrical maintenance department.  Client:  Ministry of Transportation.  

·           BC Highways Guide Signing Design Manual:

Research and development for an interim production of the new BC Guide Signing Manual.  Special Features: Required extensive research of signing systems in Canada, U.S.A., Australia and Europe; involved extensive liaison with the Ministry; and, will set the standard for the Province.  Client: Ministry of Transportation. 

·            BC Master Municipal Specifications:

Research, development, and production of the BC Master Municipal Specifications new design guidelines, material standards, and construction standards for roadway lighting and traffic signals. Special Features:  Required incorporation and streamlining of the various independent municipal standards and specifications most of which were originally produced by Shaflik Engineering.

·           Coquitlam Traffic Signal Program, Coquitlam, BC:

Conducted design and project management of 21 traffic signals for various intersections.  Capital Value: Electrical, $1M.  Special Features: Involved tieing into the computerized co-ordination system.  Client: City of Coquitlam.

·           Pitt River Swing Bridges Project, Port Coquitlam:

Investigated existing electrical installation, which included dual radial feed hydro services and all motor control panels; field input limit switches; hydraulic drives and control solenoid valves; traffic signals for river and road vehicles; termination and junction boxes; traffic gates; video monitoring cameras; and, cathodic protection for the bridge.  Capital Value: Electrical, $5M.  Special Features: Prepared record drawings of the electrical installation, which are to be used as the basis for design to convert the existing relay control to PLC (programmable logic controller) control system.  Client: Ministry of Transportation.

·           Barnet Hastings People Moving Project, Port Moody / Burnaby: 

Conducted electrical design and inspection of street lighting, traffic signals, HOV signing and advanced traffic signal coordination system.  Assisted the Ministry is development of the communications system along the corridor.  Capital Value:  $18M; Electrical, $1.44M.  Special Features:  Involved co-ordination with the Ministry, the City of Port Moody and BC Hydro.  Client: SNC-Lavalin and McElhanney Consultants for the Ministry of Transportation.

·          Ladner Creek Bridge and Kingsvale Bridge, Coquihalla Highway Project, Phase 1, Merritt to Hope:

Designed deck heating for both bridges.  Capital Value: Electrical, $700,000.  Special Features: Involved de-icing control systems; adverse terrain; extreme climatic conditions; and, the need to build a power line to the area.  Client: Ministry of Transportation.

·          Coquihalla Highway Lighting, Signals, and Signing, Coquihalla Highway Project, Phases I and II, Hope to Merritt and Merritt to Kamloops:

Carried out design and full project management of all electrical and signing work for the entire project.  Capital Value:  Electrical, $15M.  Special Features: Involved a freeway with adverse mountainous terrain; extreme climatic conditions with heavy snowfalls; scheduling through the winter months; and, fast-track construction.  Advance procurement of all specialized equipment.  Client: Ministry of Transportation.

·         Okanagan Connector Electrical and Signing, Coquihalla Highway Project, Phase III, Merritt to Peachland:

Carried out design and project management of all aspects of the electrical systems and the regulatory, warning, and guide signing systems.  Capital Value: Electrical, $4M.  Involved construction supervision and co-ordination through 20 different construction projects; adverse terrain and climatic conditions; and, a fast-track project.  Client:  Ministry of Transportation.

·           Nanaimo Parkway Project, Vancouver Island Highway Project, Nanaimo:

Designed roadway lighting and traffic signalization for expressway standards.  Capital Value: Project, $100M; Electrical, $3M.  Special Features: Involved a fast-track project; and, was the first project to incorporate new Ministry standards for the electrical works.  Client: ND Lea Consultants and Koors-Intercad for the Ministry of Transportation.

·           Duke Point Highway, Nanaimo:

Designed roadway lighting and traffic signalization for both expressway and rural highway standards.  Capital Value: Project, $50M; Electrical, $1M.  Special Features: Involved a fast-track project and coordination with the new BC Ferries terminal.  Client: Ministry of Transportation.

·           McKenzie Interchange Project, Vancouver Island Highway Project:

Provided design of roadway lighting and traffic signalization.  Capital Value: Project, $55M; Electrical, $3M.  Special Features: Involved a fast-track project; required accommodation for an observatory due to ambient light and for special lighting fixtures to make the lighting less obtrusive, enhance the overpass structure and give a floating effect; necessitated extensive design to accommodate the heavy ferry  traffic through the detours; and, resulted in the design of four different signals for four stages to accommodate the construction.  Client: Crippen Consultants for the Ministry of Transportation.   

·           Mary Hill Bypass Project, Port Coquitlam:

Designed high mast lighting, roadway lighting and traffic signals.  Capital Value: Project, $40M; Electrical, $2M.  Special Features: Included high mast lighting; and, required future provisions for an advanced changeable lane control system and traffic management system.  Client: ND Lea Consultants for the Ministry of Transportation.

·           City of Coquitlam Road Intersections Project, Coquitlam, BC:

Carried out traffic signal design and advanced interconnection of signals for 50 different intersections; and, prepared and co-ordinated the construction of traffic signal and communications designs.  Capital Value:  $2M.  Special Features: Included preparation of construction contracts, project supervision, and inspection.  Client:  City of Coquitlam.

·           Matsqui Traffic Co-ordination System Project, South Fraser Way, BC:

Prepared the co-ordination of the traffic signal system along South Fraser Way.  Capital Value:  $100,000.00  Special Features: Used PC-based Closed Loop Traffic Signal Monitoring System; provided significant savings through the utilization of overhead wiring on BC Hydro/telephone poles; and, co-ordinated location of system detection loops.  Client: District of Matsqui.
